The other day, England upcoming indie-rock band The Vaccines had to cancel their fall tour. This, as many people may point out, is very similar to the Kings of Leon debacle that happened earlier this summer. If you don't remember, Kings of Leon also cancelled part of their tour. Here's the difference(s) between the two bands.
First off, these videos should tell you just what kind of people KoL are...
I wonder how many shows he's told the fans they're the best in the world... By the way, he never came back on stage at that show... And then this was posted on their website a few days later.
"We are so sorry to say Kings of Leon are canceling their entire US tour due to Caleb Followill suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion. The band is devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break. Unfortunately, the US dates cannot be rescheduled due to the band's international tour schedule. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. Tickets purchased online or via phones will be automatically refunded. The band will resume touring in Canada at the Rogers Center in Vancouver, BC, on September 28th. That show was originally schedule for September 14th."
Now compare this to the statement on the Vaccines' website...
"Sorry to keep so many of you in the dark regarding our touring plans over the next few weeks, but we wanted to be sure of them before we spoke to you. Unfortunately, the Doctor has now confirmed that, this week, he will be operating on my throat for a third time this year. It was the wait for this decision, and no other reason, that meant we were able to complete commitments over this last week and why we will not be able to complete those in the coming weeks.
In a bid to allow my throat to recover and rehabilitate completely, we will be cancelling all shows, including our trips to North America in September and Japan and Europe in October. We will resume with our touring commitments in Paris on October 26th before supporting our friends the Arctic Monkeys here in the UK. This allows me to have eight weeks of the best vocal therapy available, allowing the best possible chance of complete recovery.
As I have said before, we understand any anger or upset, but we hope you all understand that we are completely devastated by this problem that has continued to plague us personally and professionally during the best year of our lives. Cancelling shows in exchange for repeated hospital visits plain fucking sucks. I know it may seem unfair that we continue to visit certain places whilst failing to visit your city or country, but touring is all we have ever wanted to do, so to suggest that we may not want to play a show, or that certain shows take priority over others, is not true. We are simply following the Doctor's orders. You have our word on that. We need to be able to perform to the best of our abilities without doing permanent damage to my throat. I can assure you that if you grant us your understanding and your patience, we will be in your hometown to play for you in the very near future.
The following dates have now been rescheduled from October to the new dates below, tickets from the original shows will remain valid for these:
Sun 11 Dec Hamburg Knust
Mon 12 Dec Koln Luxor
Wed 14 Dec Amsterdam Paradiso
Thu 15 Dec Copenhagen Vega
Fri 16 Dec Stockholm Debaser Medis
Sun 18 Dec Berlin Postbahnhof
Mon 19 Dec Brussels AB Main Hall
For those of you in Italy, Ireland and North America, please bear with us whilst we endeavour to reschedule the affected dates. Japanese dates will now happen in February and we will also be announcing dates in South and Central America very soon too.
Once again, please accept our sincerest apologies and know that we are extremely sorry to let you all down. I hope we will see as many of you as possible in the Autumn. Justin x"
Notice a difference? Number one, and most importantly, the reason for the Vaccines' tour cancellation, their lead singer, wrote a personal message to the fans apologizing and explaining the situation. Kings of Leon, and most importantly, their lead singer Caleb Followill had their management write a statement instead of he/them writing their own personal message. Even worse, KoL's statement is simply a paragraph, whereas the Vaccines' is a well thought-out and thorough explanation of why they can no longer play the tour. Now I'm not saying Caleb Followill is a drunk and a drug addict, but I'm also not saying that he isn't.
Finally, the deepest difference to me is shown in one sentence in the Vaccines statement:
"Canceling shows in exchange for repeated hospital visits plain fucking sucks."
To me, that shows that the band is truly pissed that they are missing shows and seems very cool to a hipster like myself. Does this seem like a guy who is pissed to have a couple months off?
No. Fuck Kings of Leon.
