Top Ten: Songs to Wake Up To

What makes a song a good song to wake up to. It definitely varies. Some characteristics may include a catchy beginning, a slow start and then a drop, and definitely something to get you motivated to get out of bed. I find that those songs that start slow, but with a solid catch to begin with, and then gradually build are the best to wake up to. So here's our...

Top Ten
Best Songs to Wake Up To

10.) When I'm Small - Phantogram, Eyelid Movies

Let the small drum kick in the beginning awaken your senses and then the drop bringing the heavy beat and guitar waken you completely. Then Sarah Barthel's vocals and the thought of her (see below) should motivate you to get out of bed and do something with your life.

9.) You Only Live Once - The Strokes, First Impressions of Earth

Possibly the only good song off of The Strokes third LP, but it is catchy. The opening guitar riffs are addictive to just think about and once you wake up to them you'll have them stuck in your head all day. If the opening licks don't wake you up, once the double guitar chords and chorus come in you should be stimulated.

8.) Ragged Wood - Fleet Foxes, Fleet Foxes

The opening harmonizing is enough to catch your attention and once the drums and bass fall into place your foot should be tapping under the covers. Feel free to stay in bed for a little and enjoy the lyrics for a while though and you could possibly be having philosophical and life changing thoughts when you get in the morning shower.

7.) Sleeping Lessons - The Shins, Wincing the Night Away

Maybe the only song that will make both the "Wake Up" and "Fall Asleep" lists. The opening, trippy, noise will wake you up and then put you right back to sleep. However, once James Mercer screams "Spilled it out on the ragged floor!"you will wake up again... And then the electric guitar strumming that begins at 2:27 will have you air-guitaring to the coffee maker.

6.) Morning Thought - Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., It's a Corporate World

The song is called "Morning Thought," so you know it's about waking up... Maybe. The opening piano shouldn't get you going, but the heavy drum beats combined with the fresh guitar licks certainly will. Then the soothing voice of FreeCreditReport.com will urge you into the days work.

5.) Victory Dance - My Morning Jacket, Circuital

Of all the MMJ songs to choose from for this topic, we went with one nobody may have thought of. You will probably sleep through the opening gong smash, but you'll gradually hear Carl Broemel's guitar and Jim James' voice combining for the opening lines and be humming them all day long. Then James' affected voice will have you questioning whether this is an acid flashback or not. As the song climbs, up through space seemingly, you'll just wait for the explosion at the end, and when it comes, you're ready to get out of bed. Funny, from a song about the "setting sun."

4.) Wake Up - Arcade Fire, The Funeral

The song is called "Wake Up" how the hell could it not be on this list? Well if it sucked it wouldn't be. But it doesn't. The opening C-chords may seem dull, but as it builds and the cymbals crash and the screaming begins, you, like thousands before who have listened to this song, will finally be motivated to "wake up" and do something. Just hope it's not something inspired by Win Butler's Nazi haircut.

3.) Dance Yrself Clean - LCD Soundsystem, This is Happening

Let this song act as your "snooze-button" if you need one. The slow building percussion and vocals will be in the background of your late/early morning dreams, but once the entire song drops a couple of minutes in you'll be wide awake to this mega-dance jam. Then, if you are really one of those people who hit's snooze twice, feel free, because as the song slows down again you can surely fall back asleep, but once it drops for a second time, don't expect to fall back asleep to the thundering beats.

2.) KC Accidental - Broken Social Scene, You Forgot it in People

The opening guitar riffs of this song should certainly liven your senses in the morning. Once the pounding drums come in and accompanying guitars you should be ready to get up. Be sure to lay in bed a while though and enjoy Kevin Drew referring to his former band in the lyrical section of the song as it slows down... Only for a bit. For another "snooze-button," we've included the preceding song "Capture the Flag" from the album to act as a precursor to this jam.

1.) Young Blood - The Naked and Famous, Passive Me, Aggressive You

Underrated, thats the only way you can honestly describe this jam. The fact the TNAF haven't blown up yet still shocks me. If the opening piano riffs don't draw your attention I don't know what will. If you don't wake up to the synths, guitar, drums, and vocals of this song then you are dead. That's the only thought I could conclude. Enjoy. Wake up.
